Since the civil war began in Syria in 2011, the people of the Middle East have suffered unimaginable hardship and loss. Millions of Syrians fled their homes when ISIS invaded their communities. They are now destitute, living in foreign countries like Turkey, Jordan, Lebanon, and other places where they do not speak the language and cannot find employment. Likewise, millions of Iraqis fled their homes and headed for the northern region of Kurdistan.
Christian Aid Mission assists numerous indigenous ministries inside Syria and Iraq, as well as in the countries to which refugees fled. Away from their homes, where it was risky for them to inquire about the Christian faith, refugees have been talking with native missionaries about the gospel. Many have expressed disillusionment in Islam and interest in Jesus Christ.
Since ISIS was driven out of their self-proclaimed territory, many internally displaced people are returning to their towns and villages. Those who have become Christians are taking the gospel back to their communities, which have been closed to the gospel for centuries.

Building Christ’s Church
Since an indigenous ministry in Lebanon launched its audio outreach program in May 2017, hundreds of thousands of Kurdish people throughout Syria, Iraq, and Turkey have heard the gospel in their own language via radio and podcast. More than 14,000 people have called the ministry’s call centers to learn more about Jesus. The ministry is looking into setting up additional call centers to meet the demand. One of several Christian Aid Mission-assisted indigenous ministries in the Middle East caring for traumatized refugee children, a Christian school in Jordan is providing Iraqi refugee children with a haven of healing. Teachers at the school use the Bible as part of their curriculum and teach students English, which will give them a career advantage. Apart from providing for their basic needs, gospel workers are going tent-to-tent to sit with the refugees, listen to their stories and pray for them. They distribute food packages, bottled water, clothing, shoes, and baby formula for infants born to mothers too malnourished to nurse them. During the winter months, they distribute firewood, blankets, and heaters. The ministries are also reaching children through Arabic picture Bibles. Help Spread the Gospel in Iraq
Ministering to people of varied ethnicities and religions, native Christian workers focused on one group after their ethnic religious rite. “The Lord allowed many of them to accept Christ after we delivered the gospel and Bibles to them,” the ministry leader said. “Today, hardly any church or home church is devoid of believers from this background, and the Lord works among them with strength and salvation of souls.” In another area, workers recently planted a house church built around two families who returned home after coming to Christ in a camp for the displaced. Donations are sought for such gospel work. Pray for the health and safety of new Christians.
Equip Gospel Workers in Iran
A group of new Christians has begun meeting led by a member of their ethnic group. Elsewhere, native Christian workers shared the gospel with a woman whose husband and child had accepted Christ, and a few days later she had a dream and called a leader, who along with his wife led her to saving faith. At a recent training day for new Christians, some brought their friends, and three new people were saved. Workers then spent two days training home church leaders. Donations of $25 or $50 are sought for such evangelism and discipleship. Pray the Lord will fulfill every work of faith with His power.
Christ Revealed amid Disaster in Turkey
Efforts to help victims of the earthquakes that devastated Turkey have led to gospel opportunities, though ministry workers were seeing such openings grow even before the disasters. One worker, a Syrian refugee who accepted Christ and began helping to distribute aid, recently received a call at 10 p.m. from one of his countrymen – a refugee who had taken his sick child to a hospital emergency room. “He said that the doctor wanted to meet with me,” he said. “I was surprised and a little worried why the doctor would call me.”
With ISIS in Pursuit, He Couldn’t Save His Daughter
The father of a displaced family in Iraq recently told Christian workers how he loaded up 21 relatives onto a pick-up truck to flee Islamic State (ISIS) terrorists in 2014. “Fadhil* suddenly saw in the mirror that his daughter, Lina*, had fallen from the vehicle, and the wheels of ISIS were not far behind them,” the native ministry leader said. “He was faced with a painful choice: Should he stop for his daughter, or continue on to save the rest of his family?” Silently agonized, Fadhil said nothing to his relatives of what he had seen.
